SUSSEXNATUREWEB is designed to bring you the best of natural history in Sussex, especially in West Sussex. On the following pages you will find useful information concerning a wide-ranging number of localities and subjects. Further pages will be added as the year moves on.
Theft from parked cars at nature reserves and the like in many parts of West Sussex remains a problem. When visiting any reserve, please remove all valuables from your car and ensure that it is firmly locked. If you have an alarm system, ensure that it is in operation. If you have a glove box, open it and leave it open and empty during your absence. Also, if you drive a hatch-back and have a parcel shelf which obscures the area behind the rear seats, take it out and leave it at home. That way, anyone looking into the car will see that you have nothing of value hidden away. Check around the car-park before you go off: if anyone is sitting in a nearby vehicle, have a casual look at them. If they look suspicious, just note their registration number: it may be of use to you later on! Some car-parks, such as the one at Church Norton, for instance, are regularly targetted. One last suggestion: remove all bird club, RSPB, county trusts' stickers etc., from the windows of your car. Potential thieves know that cars with such stickers are likely to be carrying optical goods etc.
